Maxime Alexandre ASC was born in Ronse, Belgium, in 1971 and moved with his family to Rome when he was 5. His stepfather, Inigo Lezzi, was an assistant director, and Alexandre was soon working as an actor in such films as Élie Chouraqui’s Une page d’amour and Nanni Moretti’s Bianca.
Alexandre discovered a passion for photography on the set of a short film Lezzi directed. When the family moved to Paris in the late 1980s, he began his career in the camera department, learning from Darius Khondji, ASC, AFC; Jean-Yves Escoffier, AFC; Pierre Lhomme, AFC; Vilko Filač; Tonino Delli Colli, AIC; and Franco Di Giacomo, AIC, among others.
Alexandre’s first cinematography job was shooting 2nd unit on a commercial for director Michel Gondry. In 2001, he met Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur when he shot 2nd unit for Aja’s father, Alexandre Arcady, on Break of Dawn. Two years later, Aja, Levasseur and Alexandre collaborated on Aja’s directorial debut, High Tension.
Alexandre and Aja reteamed on the 2006 remake of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, and Alexandre and Craven collaborated on the anthology film Paris, je t’aime, which screened at Cannes. Alexandre was named one of Variety’s 10 Cinematographers to Watch in 2006.
His credits include Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Maniac, Earth to Echo, The Voices, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Shazam!, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Crawl, Oxygen, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. His upcoming films include Cello and Role Play.
As a writer-director, Alexandre’s credits include Holy Money and Christopher Roth.
Earlier this year, he staged a photographic exhibition, “Time, Essentials in Solitude,” at Palazzo Palumbo Fossati in Venice.
