Adolpho Veloso ABC AIP won Best Cinematography at this year’s Critics Choice Awards for his powerful work on Train Dreams.

The Brazilian cinematographer pipped nominees including Anthony Dod Mantle ASC BSC DFF, for his efforts on 28 Years Later, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC, for her lensing of Sinners, to the prize.

This follows Veloso’s recent success at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, as well as his nomination for a Film Independent Spirit Award and shortlisting for an Academy Award

Speaking about his time on Train Dreams, Veloso told British Cinematographer that he relied on the highly durable RED Komodo digital camera, “which we could spare in case anything went wrong!” Which, thankfully, it didn’t.

“I feel like once you are living amongst loggers – because we had a few of them on the shoot – you realise that they are really able to know exactly where the tree is going down,” he added.

One Battle After Another won Best Feature on Sunday night (4 January), with Paul Thomas Anderson winning Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for the film.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners took home four trophies, the joint most on the night: Best Original Screenplay, Young Actor or Actress for Miles Caton, Score and the inaugural Casting and Ensemble award.

Frankenstein also won four prizes: Best Supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi, along with Costume Design, Hair & Makeup and Production Design.

KPop Demon Hunters won two prizes, Best Animated Feature and Song, and F1 also took Best Sound and Editing.

Meanwhile, The Secret Agent won Best Foreign Film and The Naked Gun scooped Best Comedy.
