Cinematographer Łukasz Żal PSC among top TIFF honourees

Cinematographer Łukasz Żal PSC is set to be honoured with the Variety Artisan Award at the Toronto International Film Festival on 10 September.

Żal receives the award recognising “a distinguished creative who has excelled at their craft and made an outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment”, as Variety notes. Żal’s most recent film is Jonathan Glazer’s German-language war drama The Zone of Interest, award the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival 2023.

Other recently announced TIFF honourees include Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz, who is to receive the TIFF Emerging Talent Award, and Hong Kong artist Andy Lau, who will earn a Special Tribute Award.

“We are thrilled to honour the remarkable talents and contributions of Andy Lau, Carolina Markowicz, and Łukasz Żal,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO, TIFF. “An industry icon and multi-faceted artist with an impressive filmography, Lau has paved the way for a generation of performers. Emerging Talent honouree Markowicz has an exciting future ahead as one of the most fearless directors of her generation, and Żal’s cinematography continues to evoke emotion in The Zone of Interest.”
