The British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) has launched their new podcast ‘Work in Progress’ and released a the first episode presented by Mark Kermode featuring the 3 nominees of the Peter Lamont Spotlighting New Talent Award and BFDG Chairperson, Blair Barnette.
This award, which is supported by Netflix, was created by the BFDG to highlight the future stars of the next generation of filmmakers. It was named after Oscar winning Production Designer, Peter Lamont who was always keen to help and support young talent in the Art Department.
Mark Kermode has a close association with the BFDG having presented their Production Design Awards for the last two years. This is an ongoing podcast collaboration in which Kermode explores the craft of the Production Designer and the Art Department in Film and Television.
In this podcast Mark talks to:
BFDG Chairperson – Blair Barnette
Matilda Beard – Junior Draughtsperson
Katie Mazerek – Junior Draughtsperson
Rachel Neill – Art Department Assistant
The 3 young designers talk about getting a job in the film industry, what their current roles as young designers involve and what their career aspirations are within the Art Department. This podcast is a must for anyone considering a career in the film industry.
Blair Barnette (BFDG Chairperson) talks to Mark about the real need to bring new talent into the Art Department and the many routes to get there, not just the conventional ones through a degree in Film and TV design. She says that many people have skills that could easily transfer to the Art Department, they just need the interest and determination to make contact with people in the industry and put themselves forward.
The ‘Work in Progress’ podcast will be available on the BFDG website and via their social media channels as well as through the usual podcast providers.
