EnergaCAMERIMAGE to present Superpower with Sean Penn
Oct 26, 2023
When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the world as we knew it changed for ever. As a film festival dedicated to the art of cinematography, EnergaCAMERIMAGE wishes to remain apolitical, but they tried to help their Ukrainian friends any way they could, including bringing the OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival and the Ukrainian Film Festival of Art of Cinematography KINOKO to Toruń for EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2022.
They are now proud to announce that co-director Sean Penn will personally present Superpower (co-directed by Aaron Kaufman) in Toruń during the 31st edition of EnergaCAMERIMAGE Film Festival, and take part in a press conference alongside producer Billy Smith after the screening.
The documentary started months before the Russian invasion on Ukraine as a means to understand the legacy of the Maidan protests and the road that led Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky from being a comic actor to becoming the nation’s fearsome president. Then, when the improbable became undoubtable, the filmmakers – who were on site on February 24th – not only recorded several interviews with Zelensky but also shot footage at the front, thus creating a multilayered view on the war and its impact on Ukraine and its people. While still a work in progress, Superpower had its international premiere during this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and the finished film has been travelling the world since, and can currently be seen in the United States on Paramount+.
