Earlier in the festival, Phedon Papamichael ASC GSC was honoured with the Cinematography Icon Award for his “extraordinary legacy” in cinema.

“It’s wonderful to be here,” he said. “It’s always nice when a festival invites you and puts you in touch with colleagues to discuss the industry. That’s very important for independent films.”

Cinematography Focus celebrated its fourth edition as “a vital platform to advance the craft of cinematography through education, networking, and recognition of artistic excellence” at EMIFF this year.

As well as an Icon Talk from Papamichael, the Focus included a “Creating emotion through cinematography” panel, moderated by British Cinenatographer’s Editor-in-Chief Zoe Mutter, and a Masterclass from Jamie Ramsay BSC SASC.

Speaking of Cinematography Focus at EMIFF, festival director Sandra Lipski said: “The Cinematography Focus represents our commitment to celebrating the art and vital craft of cinematography, which perfectly blends both the technical and creative sides of filmmaking.

“Since establishing this programme in 2022, we have built a thriving community where filmmakers can explore the latest technical innovations, engage in meaningful conversations about evolving shooting styles, and receive top-tier education from industry leaders.

“Daytime programmes of Masterclasses, panels and the Gear Lounge are complemented by nightly film screenings throughout the Cinematography Focus, offering equal measures of training and inspiration.”
