Acclaimed cinematographer Phedon Papamichael ASC GSC, actor, director and screenwriter Steve Buscemi and actress Ingrid García-Jonsson inaugurated the 14th edition of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival this evening (22 October) at Palma’s Palau de Congressos.

During the opening ceremony, these three major industry figures were honoured, and the film Los Domingos by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa – recently awarded the Golden Shell in San Sebastián – was screened.

With this new edition, EMIFF “strengthens its position as one of Europe’s most prominent film festivals and turns Palma into an international showcase for the industry”, a press release said.

The festival brings together over 100 filmmakers from 30 countries and will screen 130 films selected from 1,150 international submissions.

“We have grown with passion and consistency to become a solid cultural brand and a Mediterranean reference,” said festival director Sandra Lipski.

“With the support of our partner institutions, we are elevating Mallorca’s cultural landscape. Our reach is international, thanks to the outstanding content and the presence of world-class guests. But at Evolution, we also champion new talent. We love blending experience and recognition with financial awards for emerging voices – to support and project them.”

Papamichael, Oscar nominee and international reference in the art of cinematography, was honoured with the Cinematography Icon Award.

Papamichael has left his mark on acclaimed films such as Nebraska, Ford v Ferrari, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Walk the Line

He praised the festival’s high quality and expressed gratitude for a “very special” award, as part of a festival that promotes and showcases new talent. Papamichael also highlighted the essential role of film and culture in today’s society.

“It’s wonderful to be here,” he added. “It’s always nice when a festival invites you and puts you in touch with colleagues to discuss the industry. That’s very important for independent films.”

Buscemi, one of Hollywood’s most versatile performers – known for his iconic roles in Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and the series Boardwalk Empire – received the Evolution Icon Award for his long and prolific career.

With the audience on their feet and after a long ovation, Buscemi thanked the festival for the award and, in a humorous speech, dedicated it to his team, saying he felt “very lucky”.

“Filmmaking is collaboration – we need each other,” he said, also emphasising the importance of diversity. Buscemi praised the festival’s role, adding, “It’s not easy to organise events like this.”

And Spanish-Swedish actress García-Jonsson, regarded as one of the freshest and most promising voices in Spanish cinema, received the Evolution New Talent Award 2025, dedicated to artists whose creativity is shaping the future of film.

With the words “cinema creates families”, García-Jonsson dedicated the award to her team.
