LED on camera: leveraging technology

In recent years, there has been growing maturity of new applications of technology such as real-time rendering engines, motion capture technology, and human-computer interaction. These technologies have been increasingly introduced into various industries leading to new industrial upgrades. Most prominently, while the film and television industry came to a standstill under the impact of the pandemic, it is now turning to LED displays. This technology not only brings hope to the troubled film and television industry but also leads the way towards filmography technology upgrades.

Why in-camera LED virtual production?

Virtual production moves the creation of assets to the early stages, allowing the production team to develop a shooting scheme in advance based on the preview of the pre-production visual effects. This approach greatly saves post-production time and cuts risks during shooting when compared with traditional production technology. LED virtual production allows actors to play their roles facing tangible scenes by integrating settings and lighting, so the actors will be as engaged as when they perform in real-life settings regardless of the time, place, weather, and other factors. For the actors, what you see is what you get. Thus, this technology has greatly improved the efficiency of filming. Many renowned companies have already built their own LED virtual studios, and there have been hundreds of films made using virtual production technology around the world. The advantages of this new technology have been fully demonstrated and proved.

Find your product – Unano 1.8F

Unano is one of Unilumin’s classic flagship products, winning the Red Dot: Best of the Best, Red Star Award and many other international awards as well as obtaining many patents. It is easy to install and maintain and compatible with HDR technology. In addition to high-end rental, Unilumin has also upgraded and launched Unano for film. As one of the best supports for film and television shooting, its specific advantages are as follows:

  • Smaller pitch: The smaller the pixel pitch, the better the display and the more realistic the virtual scene. Unano 1.8F is suitable for shooting environments that require high-quality images and can provides a better display effect, because its pixel pitch is smaller than 2.3/2.6 and it can be customised to meet the different needs of scenes, even achieving a 270° arc.
  • Low scan rate and high refresh rate: The system can achieve a 7680Hz refresh rate and 1/15 scan rate to render continuous images with no black scan lines, making the image display more stable while delivering fewer visual flickers, presenting the in-camera image with more details.
  • Wide colour gamut and processing depth: A smooth display is key for shooting. The wider the colour gamut, the richer the details of the colours displayed on the screen; the closer to the colour of the video source itself, the more realistic the scene displayed. In addition, if the processing depth is insufficient, there will be insufficient colour levels, or gradual colour levels will not be smooth enough. In this case, the colour transition will be abrupt, unable to fully present the colour of the film, so the LED display quality is greatly degraded. Unano 1.8F takes all of this into account; it is capable of 95% DCI-P3 and 16bit display, and is able to present extremely high contrast, fully showing the colour details of the background.
  • High brightness and wide viewing angle: Unano 1.8F can meet higher brightness requirements and fully simulate the brightness of different filmed materials, making the lighting at the shooting scene more realistic and natural, and leaving directors and actors more room to play. In addition, the product has a wide viewing angle and minimizes color shift problems.
  • Multi-system compatibility: Unilumin collaborates with Megapixel and Brompton to create well-rounded virtual production solutions.

All these factors interact with each other to create the final display effect of an LED screen. Unilumin Group’s virtual production technology is at an industry-leading level and has delivered complete solutions for many clients. We believe that with the increasing maturity of virtual production technology, this technology will increasingly empower film production, advertising shooting, and large-scale events; more industry players will also focus on this. We will always continue to improve technology, integrate resources, and devote efforts to the premium image quality of LED displays.
