The BFDG announce winners of 12th Production Design Awards

Feb 20, 2023

The British Film Designers Guild (BFDG) has announced the winners of its 12th Production Design Awards, supported by BEN which were hosted last night by film critics and broadcasters  Anna Smith and Ali Plumb in the Ballroom of The Londoner in Leicester Square. The BFDG’s awards celebrate the professionalism, creativity and skill of the Art Department in the fields of film, TV and commercials.

Erin Larnder, Executive Director, Global Content & Integration at BEN Group UK said: “It’s been such an honour to sponsor the 12th British Film Designer Guild Production Design Awards, the Independent TV Drama and International TV Drama categories. As we continue to celebrate the achievements of those who bring the best content to life, the BEN team would like to congratulate the amazing winners as well as the incredible nominated finalists across all categories. It is wonderful to see your work and talent being recognised in this way!”

Blair Barnette, BFDG Chairperson said: “Tonight has been such a wonderful celebration of the exceptional talent that lies within the Art Department, talent which is often overlooked in favour of directing, acting or cinematography. Designers are the ones who set the scene and create the magic that transports you somewhere else whether it’s on the big screen or a smartphone. I am so proud that the BFDG’s awards are now a firm fixture in the awards season.”

This year was the first time the BFDG has awarded their Planet Positive Award, supported by Universal Pixels. The new award, which has been developed in association with albert and sustainability agency Creative Zero, is an important milestone in the Art Department’s commitment to do more to champion environmental sustainability in its work and is part of the Film and TV industry’s commitment to support society’s transition to a sustainable future.

The award went to the Art Department of the Apple TV mini series ‘The Essex Serpent’ where filming locations were adapted from existing buildings and locations and sets were built that could be reused again, or given another lease of life in alternative form.

Commendations were given to ‘The Peasants’ which used a self-designed solution of cardboard bricks to build the set and Art Department Assistant India Pim for facilitating the sale of refuse carpet onto charity No Floor No More which provides cheap carpeting solutions to low-income households, avoiding land-fill at the end of the production.

Neal Romanek, Head of Communications and Events, albert said: “albert is proud to have supported the creation of the Planet Positive Award, ensuring that entrants demonstrated meaningful carbon emission reductions on their productions. From using electric bikes to get to set, to protecting local wildlife on location and producing zero waste sets we are thrilled by the enthusiasm of the finalists in reducing their impact on the planet! Congratulations on your sustainable achievements!”
