Science Museum one of three UK venues to show Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm
Jun 27, 2023
Tickets are on-sale at the Science Museum for Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster.
IMAX: The Ronson Theatre within the museum is one of only three UK venues that will screen Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm, director Nolan’s favourite viewing format, and how he intended his much-anticipated film to be viewed. Only 30 venues worldwide will show the action-packed movie in the largest commercial film format ever invented. These venues, including the Science Museum, are among those been granted exclusive tickets sales three days before the rest of cinemas across the world, per Nolan’s request.
The Science Museum will host screenings for two weeks only from 21 July to 3 August 2023, with tickets now on sale. Oppenheimer is the only feature film shot with IMAX cameras to be released in 2023, making it one of the biggest cinematic experiences this year.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. The film stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Oscar winner Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. Oppenheimer also stars Oscar winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar nominated actor, writer, and filmmaker, Kenneth Branagh.
Moviegoers at the Science Museum’s IMAX: The Ronson Theatrewill experience a heightened version of Oppenheimer with unprecedented detail and clarity, for a truly immersive experience, as Nolan intended: “IMAX film brings images to life. From resolution and colour to sharpness and overall quality, there is nothing compared to using IMAX film cameras.”
Christopher Nolan designed Oppenheimer with IMAX in mind – capturing it with IMAX cameras, amongst the highest-resolution film cameras in the world, including, for the first time, sections in IMAX black & white analog photography. The finished IMAX 70mm print of Oppenheimer spans over 11 miles of film stock, and weighs 600 lbs. The film was also refined throughout post-production in an IMAX cinema to further optimise how audiences will experience it.
At the Science Museum’s IMAX: The Ronson Theatre, the film will expand vertically to fill the entire screen. lMAX 70mm film combines the clearest images at almost 10 times the resolution of standard 2k digital projection with specially created sound for a high-quality screening. From the movie itself to the cinema design, projection and sound, everything has been carefully customised and enhanced to make spectators feel like they are part of the action.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer screens at the Science Museum, London, from 21 July 2023, with tickets on sale now.
