The Guild of British Camera Technicians has announced, with deep sorrow, the death of long-serving focus puller and former chair, Tim Potter. He passed away unexpectedly at his local hospital on Wednesday 21 May 2025, after feeling unwell. He was 66.
Born on 27 June 1958, Potter built a distinguished career in film and high-end television drama, known for his skill, warmth and quiet dedication to the craft. He began his journey in the screen industries in the early 1980s, working first at a Regional Arts workshop and then with a documentary production company. He went freelance in 1985 as a clapper/loader, before gaining his first major break as a focus puller on the aerial unit of LWT’s WWII drama Piece of Cake in 1987.
Over the decades, Potter became a trusted figure on set, contributing to an impressive list of credits that includes the feature films The Wedding Date, Pride and ’71, as well as acclaimed TV dramas Top Boy, The Shadow Line and Dead Set.
A long-time member of the Guild of British Camera Technicians, he joined in 1991 and was elected to its Board in 2006. He became Chair in 2009, playing a central role in shaping the organisation’s direction. Reflecting on his career in British Cinematographer Magazine last year, Potter wrote:
“I was invited to join the Guild in 2000. I remember very well the sense of pride I felt in the way it recognised and validated my career up to that point. I am pleased to have the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to help guide the Guild.”
Known for his generosity, professionalism and advocacy for crew, Potter leaves behind a legacy that has touched many in the industry.
The Guild is currently collecting messages and memories from colleagues and friends to share with his family. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
