MBS Equipment Co will soon welcome a second cohort to the newly launched Screen Lighting Technician Apprenticeship Scheme, which aims to “nurture new talent and build a sustainable workforce” in the film and television production industry.

Having taken on four inaugural apprentices, MBS Equipment Co has revealed that it is now preparing for the next intake of entrants in September.

The scheme, which has been developed by ScreenSkills and Access Creative, working in close partnership with leading industry practitioners, was officially launched in the UK earlier in the year.

It has been described as “an important step forward in ensuring the delivery of much-needed, properly trained technicians” by the organisations involved.

Initially driven by a consortium of crew, union reps, ScreenSkills and equipment vendors, known as the Trailblazer Group, this new training programme is officially recognised by Skills England as the apprenticeship standard for a level 3 screen lighting technician.

Toby Dare, MBSE director, sustainability and risk management, said, “Having helped create this important new programme, we are delighted to welcome this second cohort of apprentices at MBS Equipment Co.

“The introduction of the scheme provides an invaluable opportunity for new entrants to begin an exciting new stage in their career, and is an essential step towards creating a sustainable future within our industry.”

The two-year programme combines virtual and in-person training, which takes place alongside a variety of workplace duties.

Provided that targets are met, candidates receive placements with shooting and rigging crews, which count towards their final assessment for becoming a level 3 screen lighting technician.

This experience covers the preparation, safe handling and application of a broad range of highly specialist, technically advanced equipment, plus the opportunity to establish new relationships with visiting crews.

Darren Smith, MBS Group CEO EMEA, added: “We’re proud to have worked with the production industry for many years in creating workplace opportunities.

“It’s immensely rewarding to now be able to help nurture new talent and build a sustainable workforce, via this formerly recognised training scheme.”
