Speaking at Cinema Route 65, Lol Crawley ASC BSC has heaped praise on K65K, urging other filmmakers to use the high-speed film camera to shoot “big cinema”.
The Oscar-winning DP behind The Brutalist claimed that the 65mm camera is “Kodak’s favourite”, and spoke about his passion for shooting on film.
The Brit said: “I have to give a shout-out to our friend, Luca [Bonicalza], and all the team at K65K in Italy. Use them and shoot on what is officially Kodak’s favourite camera. You’ll have to ask Luca why that is.
“And raise a glass to Cinema Route 65 and all of us who are committed to shooting big cinema, and of course the companies and technicians who are as invested as we are.”
The K65K is said to bring high-speed cinematography into the 65mm film format.
The giant rotary prism camera can shoot on commercially available 65mm negative stock in two formats: the large square 1:1 12-perf format, with a maximum speed of 360 fps, and the ultra-fast 2:1 6-perf format, capable of reaching 720 fps.
K65K said: “We are proud of our proprietary, patent-pending internal focusing system, which enables the use of a wide range of focal lengths – from 50mm up to 500mm – while maintaining maximum stability and optical resolution.
“The 65mm film format is having a real comeback. Its look and emotional power are unmatched. Until now, it’s been held back by cameras that simply couldn’t handle everything, especially slow motion. That’s why the artists have to switch to other formats for certain shots, losing the continuity and the soul of large format.
“K65K is the only film camera offering this feature, giving the 65mm true creative freedom. K65K uses mag with up to 2,000 feet of film and shoots from 24fps up to 400 fps in 12-perf and up to 800 fps in 6-perf, keeping all the texture, depth, and beauty of real 65mm film.”
