For the first time since its foundation in 1992, the IMAGO Annual General Assembly (IAGA) will take place in the Americas, marking a turning point for the federation. This IAGA is just the second one outside Europe, reinforcing IMAGO’s international reach and its dedication to supporting cinematographers globally. On May 12th and 13th, cinematographers from around the world will meet at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo, Brazil. This historic site, home to Latin America’s largest audiovisual archive, is a fitting location for an event focused on preserving and advancing the art of cinematography.
The IAGA is an important moment for IMAGO member societies. In a time when the industry is still recovering from the effects of the pandemic and the impact of the 2023 US film industry strike, the assembly provides as a space for exchanges and action. The path of IMAGO is shaped by its member societies, which guarantees that the federation stays sensitive to the changing demands of cinematographers all around.
This year’s assembly is particularly important as it includes elections for IMAGO’s president and two new board members. These elections will influence IMAGO’s ability to continue its project to strengthen communication both with member societies and sponsors, ensuring a stable and effective path forward. Decisions made at the IAGA will directly impact IMAGO’s initiatives, including its commitment to increasing IMAGO’s presence in major film festivals and revitalising its events program.
Following the IAGA, attendees will have the opportunity to stay for and participate in the ABC Week (May 14th-17th), hosted by the Brazilian Cinematography Association (ABC), also taking place at the Cinemateca Brasileira. Since its establishment in 2002, the ABC Week has become a vital space for discussions on artistic creativity, industry trends, and technical development. With panels, film screenings, and the prestigious ABC Cinematography Award, the event attracts professionals from all the film industry and offers an excellent opportunity for networking and exchange.
The 2025 IAGA in São Paulo is more than an assembly; it is a confirmation of IMAGO’s goal to unite and empower cinematographers around the world. IMAGO looks forward to welcoming its members to this important gathering and contributing to determining the future of the cinematographic profession.
