Highlights for August 2024 at BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX

BFI Southbank’s August 2024 programme kicks off with “Stop Motion: Celebrating Handmade Animation on the Big Screen,” supported by headline partner LAIKA. Running from 1 August to 9 October, this major season includes free screenings for children under 16, highlighting the unique magic and effortless charm of stop motion animation.

Special events in August feature:

  • World Premiere of Remastered 3D Coraline (2009): Ahead of its 15th anniversary re-release, followed by a Q&A with director Henry Selick and actor Teri Hatcher (11 August).
  • Henry Selick in Conversation (12 August).
  • Paranorman (2012) Screening and Q&A: With writer-director Chris Butler and director Sam Fell (10 August).
  • Peter Lord in Conversation (21 August).
  • Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022) Screening and Q&A: With writer-director Guillermo del Toro (18 August).
  • Stopmotion (2023) Screening and Q&A: With director Robert Morgan (21 August).
  • Ray Harryhausen Classics Screening: Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973), introduced by Alan Friswell, restorer of Harryhausen’s models (4 August).

The season continues into September and includes a free exhibition at BFI Southbank, “LAIKA: Frame X Frame,” showcasing the art and science behind LAIKA’s films.

August will also feature “Shifting Layers: The Film Scores of Philip Glass,” a month-long season dedicated to the composer’s collaborations with renowned filmmakers. Highlights include:

  • The Philip Glass Effect: A talk on 14 August with special guests, including Richard Guerin from Glass’ publishing company and record label.
  • UK premiere of A Place Called Music (2022): An engaging documentary following Glass and Mexican Wixarika musician Daniel Medina, on 11 August.

This programme offers a rich array of events celebrating both the artistry of stop motion animation and the powerful impact of Philip Glass’s film scores.
