First Main Competition film officially chosen for EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2022

The first film of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE 2022 Main Competition has been officially selected.

The work of the selection committee for the festival’s 30th edition is still ongoing, as the programmers choose from hundreds of titles submitted over the past months. The full line-up will be announced in early autumn but the organisers have revealed the first film that will compete for the Golden Frog in the Main Competition.

That film is The Perfect Number, the latest film by Krzysztof Zanussi with cinematography by Piotr Niemyjski. It tells the story of a young mathematician, David (Jan Marczewski), who has devoted his whole life to researching prime numbers, sacrificing his personal life to to this work. The protagonist begins to gradually reevaluate his priorities after he meets his distant relative, Joachim (played by Andrzej Seweryn), a successful man who has achieved almost everything professionally and decides to spend his last years of his life in his native Poland. Their meeting will unexpectedly influence the fate of both, leading to reflection on the mysterious ways of life, its passing and meaning.

Krzysztof Zanussi (born 1939) is a film and theatre director, screenwriter, producer, essayist, philosopher and physicist, considered one of the most outstanding directors in the history of Polish cinema. His cinema is characterized by a reflective, existential mood and insightful observations of a philosophical and theological nature. By showing the inner lives of his protagonists, he fleshes out their internal moral conflicts, which are always marked by accurate reflections on the condition of mankind in the contemporary world.

Piotr Niemyjski (born 1978) is a cinematography studies graduate of Lodz Film School. In his professional career, he has collaborated with filmmakers such as Krzysztof Zanussi, Agnieszka Holland, Jolanta Dylewska, Katarzyna Kozyra, Ewa Stankiewicz, Rafael Lewandowski, Bartosz Konopka, Ozan Aciktan, Kordian Piwowarski, Leiv Igor Devold, and Kei Ishikawa. He works on feature films and documentaries, as well as advertising projects.

This year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE takes place from 12-19 November in ToruÅ„, Poland.
