An estimated additional three to five thousand film and TV workers could be pushed into in-work poverty by rising costs this winter, according to calculations made by the Film and TV Charity as it readies its winter fundraising campaign this week.
Calling on individuals and businesses who can, the Charity is asking the industry to give the gift of support this winter, arguing that the industry is at its very best when it works together to mitigate the effects of the cost-of-living crisis being felt by many who are already dealing with significant emotional and practical pressures.
With the cost-of-living crisis arriving as many in the industry are getting back on their feet after the effects of the pandemic, and as many more continue to struggle with inequality, bullying, or challenges to their mental health, the case for supporting the Charity has never been clearer.
Over the last 12 months, thousands of industry workers have already accessed financial support, including new digital tools, that has enabled them to navigate some of the challenges they face. Many have also found a place to turn to through the Charity’s Bullying Advice Service, or have found practical advice, resources, and a friendly ear at the end of its 24/7 Film and TV Support Line. In order to keep these services going, and to ensure that people facing urgent need caused by rising costs don’t fall through the cracks, the Charity is asking for individuals and businesses across the creative sector to dig deep and donate if they possibly can.
From organisations that are benefitting from the production boom and want to support their workforce, to those in the industry who know how vital the Charity’s services are for themselves and for many of their colleagues, each and every donation helps. Money given means that the Charity can:
- Provide grants enabling people to access opportunity or meet urgent financial need
- Support individuals through difficult times, via their 24-hour Film and TV Support Line
- Develop resources such as their recent financial support tools
- Support mental health and wellbeing with counselling and therapy
- Support grassroots activity through Community Grants
The money you give directly helps others in the industry you love. Your donations this winter will allow us to deliver a kinder, better industry in 2023.
Alex Pumfrey, CEO at the Film and TV Charity, said “Since 1924, the Film and TV Charity has relied on the generosity of the creative community to help make a positive impact on the lives of friends and colleagues in every corner of the industry. During difficult times over the last few years, it has been this generosity that has kept many talented people in the industry and that has enabled us to continue providing services that so many rely upon every day. We fully understand that times are tough, that is why we’re asking those who can to make a donation and help us ensure we can reach those in need.
“Perhaps you’ve been supported by the Charity in the past, or you would like to give back to the industry that you love – whatever the amount, all donations mean that we can continue making film, TV and cinema a better place to work for all.”
