Jul 29, 2025

The BFI announce further details of the programme for August at BFI IMAX, home of the UK’s largest screen. From the latest blockbuster releases to auteur cinema, family favourites, IMAX remasters, 70mm and the summer’s most anticipated horror, there is no better place to escape the British summer than BFI IMAX.

New releases this month will include WEAPONS (Zack Cregger, 2025), the unnerving new film from BARBARIAN director Zack Cregger which finds a community in turmoil after all but one child from the same class disappears into the night at the exact same time, never to be seen again. Experience the horror event of the summer on the UK’s largest screen, with a preview on 7 August. Other new releases will include the continued run of THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS (Matt Shakman, 2025) in IMAX with Laser 3D and 2D, which sees Marvel’s First Family finally join the MCU in a cosmic tale of epic proportion, while F1® THE MOVIE (Joseph Kosinski, 2025) returns for more high octane, action-packed thrills from 8 August. Remastered in 4K and playing in IMAX with Laser, Hayao Miyazaki’s glorious, breathlessly inventive masterpiece PRINCESS MONONOKE (Hayao Miyazaki, 1997) opens on 15 August. Inflicted with a deadly curse, young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure and stumbles into a bitter conflict between the proud people of Iron Town and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves.

One of the most thrilling, terrifying and unforgettable films of all time, JAWS (Steven Spielberg, 1975) returns to BFI IMAX for its 50th anniversary from 29 August, providing big thrills on the UK’s largest screen in IMAX with Laser. Released in the summer of 1975, JAWS helped usher in the modern blockbuster era. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic INTERSTELLAR (Christopher Nolan, 2013) also returns following multiple sell out screenings and remains enthralling and amazing on an IMAX 70mm print. This futuristic magnum opus is a cinematic fable firmly rooted in the traditions of science fiction cinema. An Alex Garland IMAX double bill on 24 August also sees the return of CIVIL WAR (Alex Garland, 2024), the up-to-the-minute, high-octane and intelligent cautionary tale, and WARFARE (Alex Garland, Ray Mendoza, 2025), the unflinching, real-time portrayal of a 2006 Navy SEAL mission in Ramadi, Iraq. Elsewhere, BFI IMAX continues to screen the best music cinema on the UK’s largest screen, with THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE 2025 MEET-UP (Leon Gast, Jerry Garcia, 1977) on 14 and 16 August celebrating the 60th anniversary of The Grateful Dead’s eponymous film, a fan-favourite cult classic following the legendary group on what was believed to be their final performances in October of 1974, and SIGN O’ THE TIMES (Prince, 1987), Prince’s epic concert film restored and remastered in IMAX with Laser for the first time, with all 12 channel sound for the ultimate experience closing the month on 29, 30 and 31 August.

Non-IMAX releases playing at BFI IMAX in August will include EDDINGTON (Ari Aster, 2025) on Digital 4K. From the brilliant mind behind HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMAR, Ari Aster brings us a dystopian farce in the style of a modern Western, set amidst the Covid pandemic. Aster’s portrait of a paranoid man on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother, BEAU IS AFRAID (Ari Aster, 2023) will also come to BFI IMAX exclusively in IMAX with Laser for the first time in the UK on 25 August. Meanwhile, Kathryn Bigelow’s heady action thriller POINT BREAK (Kathryn Bigelow, 1991) returns in glorious Digital 4K on 10 and 25 August, seamlessly combining pulse-pounding thrills, knowing humour and bromance, and 90’s kids rejoice as JUMANJI (Joe Johnston, 1995) lands to mark its 30th anniversary in Digital 4K on 30 August. When two children discover an ancient board game they unleash jungle beasts into their home alongside a man who has been trapped inside for a quarter of a century – played by the incomparable Robin Williams. Enjoy the classic game once again, on the UK’s largest screen. We also exclusively preview COLOURFUL STAGE! THE MOVIE: A MIKU WHO CAN’T SING (Hatsune Miku, 2024) on 28 August, the gorgeous new anime from Hatsune Miku and the first film with the iconic Virtual Singer, featuring an incredible soundtrack.

Finally MAXIMUM KUBRICK, our celebration of Stanley Kubrick, the cinematic giant and master of the big screen, continues running throughout August and until the end of the year. Your favourite filmmaker’s favourite filmmaker, each of his works is a landmark of their respective genre – from costume drama and comedy, to horror and science fiction – and every one is a sight to behold on the UK’s largest screen. MAXIMUM KUBRICK kicked off in June with a sold out screening of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), playing for the first time at BFI IMAX on a magnificent IMAX 70mm print as part of the BFI Film on Film Festival 2025. The only way to experience Kubrick’s cosmic-scale masterpiece in the highest resolution possible, this print was created in 2018 through an entirely photochemical process supervised and approved by Christopher Nolan. The print will screen again throughout August, alongside other Kubrick classics on Digital: FULL METAL JACKET (1987) on 10 August and DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1963) on 24 August. The MAXIMUM KUBRICK programme continues with further Kubrick gems playing until the end of the year.
