AT THE FOREFRONT OF FILMMAKING

As Cine Gear LA moves to the new location of Warner Bros. Studios, event co-founder and chief executive Juliane Grosso shares details about what visitors can expect and the cutting-edge tech, seminars and workshops to look forward to. 

What were the highlights of Cine Gear Expo LA 2023? 
 
In 2023, Cine Gear Expo LA marked a significant return to its Hollywood origins at the iconic Paramount Studios, following the pandemic-induced hiatus. Despite lingering uncertainties in the industry, the event proceeded as planned, drawing crowds of colleagues eager to reconnect and explore the latest technologies firsthand. With the biggest slate ever of informative and entertaining panels, technology, films, demonstrations, exhibits, activities, and parties, there was no shortage of activities for the thousands of guests. The bustling aisles and engaging seminars were a testament to the resilience of the film community, showcasing our ability to unite, embrace innovation, and mutually inspire even during challenging times. 

A fitting highlight was the introduction of the new Karl Kresser Heart of the Community Award in honour of Cine Gear’s late co-founder. In keeping with Kresser’s philosophy, the award recognises individuals who selflessly forge paths enabling others to satisfy their creative passions, all with an eye to perpetuate the spirit of community.  

What technology trends did you notice at last year’s show, or do you think we’ll be seeing more of in 2024?  

 
The landscape of film and television production technology continued to evolve, driven by a convergence of innovation and necessity. Advancements in virtual production technology, including LED volume stages and real-time rendering engines, revolutionised the way filmmakers bring stories to life, offering unprecedented creative flexibility and efficiency. Additionally, the widespread adoption of remote tools and virtual production pipelines facilitated seamless communication and collaboration among geographically dispersed teams.  

As 2024 moves forward we are all keeping our eyes open to learn how artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms effect various aspects of production workflow. Also we are expecting sustainability initiatives to gain traction, including eco-friendly production practices and renewable energy solutions.  

What’s new for Cine Gear Expo LA for 2024? 

Warner Bros! And it’s clear that everyone is excited to experience this iconic motion picture studio with roots in old and new Hollywood. Since our announcement we have been flooded with exhibit requests and are still adding inside stages and outside booths along the backlot’s Midwest and French Streets which housed: Rebel Without a Cause, The Music Man, Bonny and Clyde, Dukes of Hazard, Gilmore Girls, La La Land, and hundreds more. Our growing exhibitor lineup, features even more cutting-edge technology and industry-leading vendors. Additionally, we’re thrilled to offer an expanded lineup of seminars and workshops, covering a wide range of topics from virtual production techniques to sustainable filmmaking practices.  

Can you tell us about any new exhibitors at Cine Gear LA for 2024?  

Expect to see more moviemaking departments represented including Warner Bros Studios Production Sound & Video Services which will showcase current technology as well as nostalgic television artifacts like the original mixing console from the Friends set. Technology from cameras, optics, and lighting and grip of all types continue to be at the forefront, along with other filmmaking tools from scheduling software to slates, with hundreds of companies from around the world announcing their latest innovations. 

What about Master Classes – are there any visitors should look out for?  

Cine Gear’s Lighting Master Class is an annual occasion on Sunday following the Expo’s close. This year, a team of industry revered cinematographers will share their knowledge and enthusiasm for their craft as they demonstrate and discuss their hallmark techniques and problem-solving skills. The 2024 Lighting Master Class will take place at the All American Homecoming House at Warner Bros Studios lot. Guest instructors will be announced by Cine Gear opening day: 7 June 2024. But don’t wait to sign up—this is traditionally a sold out event. 

Can you tell us more about your Film Series at Cine Gear LA? What makes it so special? 

The Film Series at Cine Gear Expo is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for independent and student filmmakers, as well as music video and commercial producers to have their projects screened amongst industry professionals on iconic studio lots, such as Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank. For some film finalists screening at Cine Gear, it is their first time on a studio lot and the access to go beyond the front gate, to explore modern film tech and gear against the backdrop of sets from films that inspired them in the first place, and to sit in legendary screening rooms, is pure movie magic. Additionally, the generous prize packages donated by our sponsors provide winning filmmakers with the equipment and tools to make their next project. The Film Series at Cine Gear Expo is invested in showing the filmmakers of tomorrow what’s possible today.  

Cine Gear Atlanta returns this autumn in Atlanta – what can visitors expect?  

Free registration is already open for the south’s top Hollywood-style event to be held at the world-renowned Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia on 4-5 October 2024. Known for its focus on connecting industry members with the art and craft of filmmaking, this year’s show will bring it all together with the latest technology and techniques via exhibits, seminars, demos, screenings, and a key opportunity to catch up and network with friends and colleagues. Visitors can expect amazing exhibits with fresh announcements, access to the Lux Machina Virtual Stage, a memorable mixer and more.  

What makes Cine Gear stand out from other kit shows around the world?

Our Film Series is a festival dedicated to inspiring talent with entries from rising stars and films from around the world including top film schools.
