The BFDG announces entries are open for inaugural Planet Positive Award

Sep 21, 2022

The British Film Designers Guild (BFDG), have announced that entries are now open for a new Planet Positive Award which will be presented at its 12th Production Design Awards ceremony alongside 14 other awards that celebrate the very best Film and TV Art Department creatives in the UK. Entries for all of these categories are also now open.

The event will take place at The Londoner Hotel on Saturday 18th February which puts the BFDG’s awards firmly in the 2023 film and TV awards calendar alongside the likes of BAFTA, the Art Directors Guild of America and AMPAS.

Awards will be given for outstanding work on film, TV and commercials released during 2022 that celebrate the professionalism, creativity and skill of the Art Department with its members, valued supporters and friends from the industry.

The new Planet Positive Award, which has been developed in association with albert and sustainability agency Creative Zero, is an important milestone in the Art Department’s commitment to do more to champion environmental sustainability in its work and is part of the Film and TV industry’s commitment to support society’s transition to a sustainable future.

All entries will be judged by a panel of sustainability professionals working in film & TV, including representatives from albert and sustainability agency Creative Zero, as well as selected members of the BFDG committee.

The panel will be looking for a BFDG member and/or Art Department team that can demonstrate their best efforts to produce environmentally sensitive designs and construction methods, sustainably sourced materials, props and thoughtful end of life planning.

The BFDG is also interested to receive entries that include designs and props that maximise the creative opportunity to showcase sustainability on the screen.

Katy Tallon – albert, Industry Sustainability Manager said: “albert is proud to be launching the Planet Positive Award with the British Film Designer’s Guild. We are seeing some exciting environmental initiatives in the Art Department that need to be celebrated. Through this award we will have the opportunity to inspire others to follow suit and invest in sustainable design  initiatives/suppliers and thoughtful end of life planning”

Blair Barnette – BFDG Chairperson said: “I am very excited about the return to The Londoner for the 12th year of the British Film Designers Guild awards and proud to see us become a fixture in the Film and TV awards season. We continue to build from strength to strength with the addition of our new Planet Positive Award for 2023, recognising not only a talent for design but for the respect and ethical preservation of our natural resources, be they flora or fauna.

It is crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution that all the Art Department makes to the production process within the film and television industry and to showcase the work of our talented members who are among some of the best in the world.

Together we recognise each other’s achievements and this wonderful planet where we thrive.”

The introduction of the Planet Positive Award will send a signal to the rest of the Film and TV industry that the Art Department fully supports the development of more sustainable methods of working and hopefully encourage them to follow suit.
