BEHIND THE LENS, ABOVE THE CLOUDS

In the world of aerial cinematography, creating captivating shots is no simple task – it’s a delicate blend of expertise, technology, constant risk assessment and creativity. The Aerial Film Company aims to provide an all-encompassing aerial filming solution for the film and television industry.

What makes The Aerial Film Company unique is its commitment to a comprehensive and integrated approach. As a truly end-to-end aerial filming supplier in the United Kingdom, they bring together seasoned crews, cutting-edge gyro-stabilised camera systems, and a fleet of high-performance helicopters to create an unrivalled support system for film productions across the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

At the heart of their success are two key players: pilot Will Banks and aerial director of photography Phil Arntz. Stemming from completely different backgrounds in their respective fields, they’re passionate collaborators whose synergy forms the foundation for the breathtaking aerial sequences they create.

Will Banks embarked on his helicopter flying career in the Royal Navy, piloting the Westland Lynx. Following a stint of flying commercial airliners and private jets, Banks delved back into the world of helicopters and, after starting GB Helicopters and assembling an impressive fleet of 10 machines, discovered his true passion in flying cameras for film and television. He’s passionate about exploring new perspectives, pushing the limits of man and machine, and putting helicopters in difficult positions to capture shots that put the audience right in the middle of the action.

Phil brings a unique blend of film expertise and a penchant for extreme sports to The Aerial Film Company. With a background as a specialist camera technician and lighting cameraman in commercials, Arntz found his calling in the office in the sky. Over the last decade, he has explored the creative possibilities of various aerial camera platforms, collaborating with renowned directors and cinematographers to bring concepts and ideas to life in the air.

Fantastic fleet

The Aerial Film Company boasts top-of-the-line Shotover K1 and Shotover F1 gyro-stabilised camera systems, ensuring every shot is smooth and stable, whilst the proven reliability of Shotover systems minimises downtime on projects. Additionally, a fully in-house, three-camera VFX array specced with three Red Digital Cinema Raptors gives productions even more scope and flexibility. Paired with single-engine AS350 and twin-engine AS355 helicopters known for their power and manoeuvrability, the company’s fleet is equipped to navigate even the most challenging filming environments.

But it’s not just about the equipment – it’s about the possibilities these tools unlock. With unique aerial stunt permissions, The Aerial Film Company brings to life daring sequences such as human underslung operations, skydives, hover drops, and helicopter abseils. Their 24/7 operations team ensures meticulous planning, providing unwavering support to productions every step of the way.

While aerial filming is their forte, The Aerial Film Company’s fleet of 10 helicopters offers services well beyond cinematic requirements. From talent charters to equipment transportation, they seamlessly handle all in-house aircraft services, ensuring clients have a one-stop solution for their aviation needs.

Unique action approach

For The Aerial Film Company, action sequences mean “flying hard and fast” – a philosophy that isn’t just about speed but about delivering dynamic, exhilarating shots that captivate audiences. This philosophy comes to life through the partnership of pilot and aerial director of photography.

Will’s vast experience as a pilot allows directors and cinematographers to dream up ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible in the air. His precision in navigating congested environments, close proximity to terrain, and air to air work with other aircraft gives creatives the confidence to execute even the most challenging shots.

Phil’s focus isn’t merely on capturing moments, it’s about placing the audience right into the heart of the action. His keen understanding of dynamic camera movement, framing, and storytelling coupled with Will’s ability to put a helicopter in the toughest places, enables directors and cinematographers to turn even their biggest ideas into reality.

Their collaboration is a dance of precision and creativity, where split-second decisions and intuitive communication lead to shots that defy expectations. Whether capturing a high-speed chase, an intense aerial battle, or a heart-stopping stunt, Will and Phil work in tandem to turn the impossible into reality.

Her meticulous coordination honed through years of experience ensures that all necessary permits are secured, regulations adhered to, and operational logistics are thoroughly planned.
