Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC has won the Best Cinematography Academy Award for her work on Sinners – making history as the first woman and woman of colour to take home the prize.
Arkapaw triumphed in a competitive category, which included ASC and BSC Award winner Michael Bauman (One Battle After Another) and Film Independent Spirit Award winner Adolpho Veloso ABC AIP (Train Dreams).
The full list of nominees included:
- Frankenstein – Dan Laustsen ASC DFF
- Marty Supreme – Darius Khondji ASC AFC
- One Battle After Another – Michael Bauman
- Sinners – Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC
- Train Dreams – Adolpho Veloso ABC AIP
Speaking in the Oscars Press Room after receiving the award, a joyful Arkapaw revealed: “A lot of little girls that look like me will sleep really well tonight because they’ll want to become cinematographers.
“Being on stage getting this award for a movie like that will change so many girls’ lives because they’ll be inspired when they weren’t before.”

Referencing her moving acceptance speech, the Academy Award winner added: “I just wanted to say thank you to all the women in the room, because moments like this don’t happen without women standing up for you and advocating for you.
“I know that this happened because of that, so I wanted to say thank you, because I don’t know a lot of the voters. I’ve learned over the past few months going through this process that it does take a village to make stuff like this happen.
“But this isn’t about me anymore. This is about so much more. And I know that. I wanted it for all the ladies in the room, and I wanted it for all the girls at home.”
Speaking to British Cinematographer, Arkapaw previously revealed why Sinners was such a special project to work on.
“This story is close to my heart because my father is Creole and born in New Orleans, where much of my family still lives,” she said.
“Its themes dealing with the Black experience in the south, community, and the legacy of segregation resonate deeply with me.”
Arkapaw’s success was one of four for the film, which previously set an Oscars record with 16 nominations in total.
Other prizes included Screenplay, Score and Actor for lead Michael B. Jordan, who played two roles in Ryan Coogler’s period horror.
Elsewhere, One Battle After Another took home the most trophies overall with six, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson.

Best International Feature went to Sentimental Value, following its successful night at the European Film Awards in January, while Best Animated Film was presented to Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters.
Mr Nobody Against Putin scooped Best Documentary Feature, Best Sound went to F1 and Best Visual Effects was given to Avatar: Fire and Ash.
