Roman Vasyanov welcomed into The ASC
Mar 7, 2022
Roman Vasyanov ASC was first exposed to composing and capturing images at a young age while working with his father on photography projects. After learning about the profession of a cinematographer, Vasyanov was accepted into the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), where he studied under cinematographer Vadim Yusov.
After graduation, Vasyanov photographed more than 300 commercials for such brands as Philips, Puma, Budweiser, Dell and Pepsi. He also shot the Russian cult musical Hipsters (aka Stilyagi), directed by Valery Todorovsky, which played at numerous international film festivals and won several Golden Eagle and Nika Awards.
Following this, the cinematographer began working in the U.S., where he shot a number of features including The Motel Life, The East and Charlie Countryman. He has been a frequent collaborator with director David Ayer — the two have teamed up on the features End of Watch, Fury, Suicide Squad and Bright. For his camerawork on End of Watch, Vasyanov earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
His feature work also includes The Wall, Thank You for Your Service and Triple Frontier. In 2019, Vasyanov again teamed up with Todorovsky, on the Russian feature Odessa (aka Одесса). For his widescreen camerawork in this romantic period comedy set in the 1970s, Vasyanov earned the Golden Eagle Award for Best Cinematography.
