Oscars 2022: Greig Fraser ASC ACS wins Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Dune
Mar 28, 2022
Cinematographer Greig Fraser ASC ACS won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his lensing of Dune at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
Taking to the stage to accept his award, Fraser said: “Denis Villeneuve, the master Denis, heās brought a whole group of unknown actors together to make an amazing movie along with our lovely producers. Thank you!
āCollaborators; Iām nothing without themā¦ my friends Patrice, Paul, Donald and Jackie… My crew, I’m not going to name them all because it will take too long, but I will call you all straight after this. And speaking of calling, mum… I will return your call and I apologise. Lauren, all the friends and family celebrating around the world and in Melbourne, and most importantly, my wife Jodie, my children Felix, Leo, and Poppy. Allowing a middle-aged man to go out and play with his friends in the sand dunes for six months is pretty amazing.ā
Nominees in the category were Dan Laustsen ASC DFF (Nightmare Alley); Ari Wegner ACS (The Power of the Dog); Bruno Delbonnel ASC AFC (The Tragedy of Macbeth); and Janusz Kaminski (West Side Story).
The Academy previously recognized Fraserās work with a 2016 Best Cinematography nomination for Lion. Fraser has also received numerous additional accolades for his work on Dune, including the cinematography prize at the BAFTA Film Awards and the American Society of Cinematographers Award for a feature film at the 36th annual ASC Awards.
Dune, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures was honoured with 10 Oscar nominations this year: best cinematography, best costume design, best sound, best original score, best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best makeup and hairstyling, best production design and best visual effects. In addition to triumphing in the best cinematography category, the epic film scooped awards in production design, editing, visual effects, sound, and original score categories.
Accepting the award for production design, Dune set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos and production designer Patrice Vermette took to the stage. Vermette paid a special tribute to his “friend Jean-Marc VallĆ©e” and thanked director Denis Villeneuve “for allowing us to dream…for being a great friend.”
Other winners included CODA (Best Picture); Drive My Car (Best International Feature); Kenneth Branagh (Best Original Screenplay for Belfast); and Jane Campion (Best Director).
History was made with Campion’s Best Director win for The Power of the Dog as it marks the first time female directors have won the award in two consecutive years (ChloĆ© Zhao won last year for Nomadland). It is Campion’s second Oscar, following the her original screenplay win for The Piano.
āBig love to my fellow nominees, I love you all… It could have been any of you. I love directing because itās a deep dive into story, yet the task of manifesting a world can be overwhelming. The sweet thing is Iām not alone,ā Campion said, accepting the Best Director award. āOn The Power of the Dog I worked with actors I’ve come to call my friends. They met the challenge of the story with the depths of their gifts…” Campion also thanked her whole crew and “brilliant producers”.
