With a career spanning over six decades, pioneering director, writer and animator Terry Gilliam, known for his visionary body of work including Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Brazil, gave a masterclass with a difference to NFTS students to celebrate his highly acclaimed career and mark his recent milestone 80th birthday.
In true Terry Gilliam style, the Oscar nominated filmmaker asked students to pose their most imaginative questions, resulting in a lively and insightful Q&A in conversation with NFTS Director Jon Wardle.
Covering filmmaking, the journey of life, being a provocateur, constructing meaning from film and drawing a line between fantasy and reality, watch the Masterclass for an open book of lessons in film and to find out which surreal student question got Terry’s vote.
Terry concluded the unmissable Q&A with some words of encouragement for NFTS students at the very beginning of their filmmaking journeys. “You’ve got to do what you believe in, what excites and thrills you, what gets the juices flowing. Otherwise you may as well take any job out there. It’s the joy of making things.”
The NFTS is thrilled to share this very special Masterclass for all to enjoy and would like to thank Terry for bringing to life so many wonderful films during the course of his esteemed career.
