Filmmakers Academy invites creators to learn from top industry mentors

Nov 11, 2021

Filmmakers Academy, a premium educational academy created by industry leaders, launched in November, offering expansive course offerings and community-building resources for cinematographers.

Filmmakers Academy CEO Lydia Hurlbut is excited about what the launch means for film professionals: “We have created this experience to give novice and experienced filmmakers the big-little breakthroughs that add up to deliver oversized results for their careers.”

Filmmakers Academy replaces and expands upon the legacy of Hurlbut Academy, which has mentored thousands of cinematographers over the past 12 years. Members gain access to 800+ hours of video content and 59 courses covering cinematography, directing, lighting, camera and lenses, grading, and more. Coming soon are courses in editing, colour correction, production and wellness. The content will be updated regularly and members can join the ongoing conversation at FA’s private social media groups, trading tips and opportunities in a friendly and inclusive virtual community.

“We’re cultivating a community built on love,” says Lydia Hurlbut. “Along with all the tech information that professionals need on-set, we provide a support network that actually helps members thrive. This is a creative space that becomes like a ‘film family’ for our members. Our mentors understand where you are at in your career, understand the pain points, and cheer you on as you develop as a filmmaker. This includes a strong emphasis on maintaining wellness and life balance.”

Filmmakers Academy builds upon a trail-blazing cinematographer’s efforts to share the tools and techniques of craft that he has learned on-set. In 2009, Shane Hurlbut ASC, founded The Hurlblog to give back to the content industry. Together with his wife, entrepreneur, RN and wellness expert Lydia, he envisioned a place where filmmakers could learn about current techniques from the real-world applications Shane developed over his 30 years of shooting major feature films, television commercials, music videos and premium streaming content. Over the past decade, their company grew into the Hurlbut Academy (HA), which has mentored and fostered the careers of  thousands of people.

Filmmakers Academy builds upon HA’s legacy and mission, providing members with access to the latest tech, tricks and skills necessary to excel in today’s industry.

Filmmakers Academy’s diverse mentor-instructors are working artists at the top of their game. Members call this “the best money can buy for ongoing education, community, and tons of tools for members” and  “an amazing platform for creative individuals to learn” where it’s “more than an online education. It’s also a place where you can find work and build friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime.” At least one member notes that the academy provides “the mentor I so desperately needed … having the input has been incredible bringing me back on track.” More member testimonials are growing at www.filmmakersacademy.com
