After growing up on Hayling Island, in a small seaside town just off the south coast of England, Eben Bolter BSC started his career in business and marketing.
He didn’t pick up a camera until he was 24, to shoot corporate videos for a media company.
Over the next few years, he immersed himself in how-to videos, books and directors commentaries, managing to shoot more than 50 short films along the way. He compares this time to learning carpentry through making a 1,000 chairs. Eben forged a career by committing to dramatic, visually thoughtful storytelling, shooting 16 feature films in the U.S. and U.K. before being named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2016 for his work on the award-winning film Chicken (2015).
Bolter now works between feature films and high-end television, and is known for his work on HBO’s The Girl Before (2022) and Avenue 5 (2020), the Netflix Original film Night Teeth (2021), Marvel’s Secret Invasion (2023) for Disney Plus, and, most recently, the critically acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us (2023).
Bolter’s recent projects include feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, with director Mike Flanagan.
He is also a member of the BSC, and you can find his personal site here.
