Discover Darius Khondji ASC AFC’s spellbinding cinematography on Bardo
Dec 8, 2022
‘Master of Light’ Darius Khondji ASC AFC is considered one of the best contemporary cinematographers. His previous directorial collaborators have included luminaries such as David Fincher, Wes Anderson and Wong Kar-wai, and 2022’s Bardo, A False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths marks his first partnership with Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Bardo sees Iñárritu return to his Mexican homeland for this most personal of projects, laced with themes of identity and heritage. Across a running time of almost three hours, viewers are treated to a rich visual spectacle that floats on the boundary between dream and reality.
Netflix has released a fascinating featurette which delves into Khondji’s cinematographic process and his fruitful work with Iñárritu. From an aesthetic influenced by Mexico’s bloody and passionate history, to a sense of perpetual movement throughout, to the years of preconception required to pull off the project’s bold large-format imagery, they take you deep inside the film’s towering visual craft.
Bardo, A False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths is released on Netflix on 16 December.
