Directors Guild of America Awards: Christopher Nolan wins for Oppenheimer

The winners of the Directors Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in 2023 were revealed during the 76th Annual DGA Awards on Saturday 10 February at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

Christopher Nolan took home the big prize of the night, winning the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film for Oppenheimer. Celine Song won the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for 2023 for Past Lives.

David Nutter won the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award for Television Direction, while unit production manager Janet Knutsen was honoured with the 2024 Frank Capra Achievement Award for her exceptional work and dedication to the Guild. Meanwhile, Gary Natoli won the 2024 Franklin J. Schaffner Award for his exceptional work as a stage manager and service to the Guild.

Peter Hoar was recognised for The Last of Us, winning Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series for 2023, while Christopher Storer won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series for 2023 for The Bear. The Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Limited Series for 2023 Award went to Sarah Adina Smith for Lessons in Chemistry.

The winner of the Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials for 2023 was Paul Miller for Carol Burnett: 90+ Years of Laughter + Love. Niharika Desai won in the Reality Programmes category for Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss, while Amy Schatz was honoured for Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School in the Children’s Programmes section.

Kim Gehrig (Somesuch) was recognised for her work in commercials, while Mstyslav Chernov won in the Documentary category for 20 Days in Mariupol.

Judd Apatow hosted the ceremony before an audience of more than 1,100 guests.
