Changes to the 69th annual BSC awards
Nov 5, 2024
The British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) has announced key changes to its annual awards.
The Board of Governors of the BSC have approved several changes to the Society’s awards.
CINEMATOGRAPHY IN A FEATURE FILM
For the first time, productions wishing to be considered for this Award will need to be submitted to this category. It was noted by the Board that in previous years members had not been able to see material from every eligible film before casting their votes. The amendment to this process will ensure that every film can be seen by members prior to votes being cast.
CINEMATOGRAPHY IN A TELEVISION DRAMA
This award will now be split into two different categories:
- Cinematography In A Television Drama (UK)
- Cinematography In A Television Drama (Streaming/International)
The Cinematography In A Television Drama (UK) award will be reserved for television shows made by domestic broadcast channels which, traditionally, are less represented as nominees due to budgetary competition from streaming shows. The Board’s intention with this step is to recognise the changing landscape of television and to celebrate the craft of the diverse community of cinematographers across all budget ranges.
CINEMATOGRAPHY IN A MUSIC VIDEO
This new award is being introduced at the 69th British Society of Cinematographers Awards and will be reserved for a UK-based Cinematographer working in the highly creative arena of music video production. The Board wishes to celebrate this vital sector of our industry, from which many of its members originate, and looks forward to showcasing the work of cinematographers in this previously overlooked medium.
Chris Ross BSC, President of the British Society of Cinematographers, commented: “In our 75th anniversary year we have reflected and celebrated those that came before us, by making these changes the Board is looking to celebrate those that will come after us. Our hope is that by expanding these categories we can celebrate even more incredible cinematography and, with the inclusion of the Music Video category, shine a light on up-and-coming cinematographers and future Society members.”
