Anti-war epic All Quiet at the Western Front dominated the 2023 BAFTA awards with seven wins, breaking Cinema Paradiso‘s record for the most BAFTA wins by a non-English language film.

Following his triumph at the BSC Awards the previous weekend, James Friend ASC BSC won the Best Cinematography award for his lensing of the German-language film. Friend fought off tough competition from Mandy AM ASC ACS (Elvis), Greig Fraser ACS ASC (The Batman), Claudio Miranda ASC ACC (Top Gun: Maverick) and Sir Roger Deakins CBE ASC BSC (Empire of Light).

Friend was “speechless” at receiving the award and admitted he hadn’t prepared a speech. He congratulated his fellow nominees for their work, saying “You constantly inspire me and you’re my heroes,” as well as highlighting the work of the film’s cast and crew.

“This was the most collaborative experience I’ve ever had with a filmmaker and I can’t quite believe it,” he said. “To Edward Berger (director) and Malte (Grunert, producer), thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to be part of this incredible, special project. And to my darling wife, my beautiful daughter and my agent, and my camera operator Daniel (Bishop ACO Assoc BSC SOC).”

All Quiet on the Western Front also saw success in the following categories: Best Adapted Screenplay; Best Film not in the English Language; Best Original Score; Best Sound; Best Director and Best Film.

Collecting the award for Best Film, director Edward Berger said, “All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of young men who, poisoned by right-wing political nationalist propaganda, go to war thinking it’s an adventure – and war is anything but an adventure. That is one of the messages of Remarque’s seminal novel and when we started making this film, that seemed like a relevant message even 100 years after the book was published.”

Martin McDonagh collects the Best Original Screenplay award for The Banshees of Inisherin (Photo by Stuart Wilson/BAFTA/Getty Images for BAFTA)

Winning four awards apiece were The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis. Elvis earned Best Casting, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hair, and Best Actor for Austin Butler, while Banshees took home Outstanding British Film, Best Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan, Best Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon, and Best Original Screenplay. Collecting the Outstanding British Film gong, Martin McDonagh said, “Big thanks to our brilliant British DP Ben Davis (BSC), who made one of the most beautiful films this year – you get my vote, Ben.”

Despite its 10 nominations, awards frontrunner Everything Everywhere All At Once saw just one win, in the Best Editing category.

Prolific British costume designer Sandy Powell was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship – the first in her profession to be given the Academy’s highest honour – while Emma Mackey won the EE Rising Star award.
