BAFTA 2022 Film Awards: Dune wins include best cinematography; Power of the Dog named best film
Mar 14, 2022
The 2022 BAFTA Film Awards returned as an in-person ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the very best in film of the past year. Dune led with five wins including Cinematography for Greig Fraser ASC ACS and wins in the Production Design, Special Visual Effects, Sound, and Original Score categories, while The Power of the Dog also won big on the night, scooping the Best Film award and Best Director award for Jane Campion – the only female director nominated in the category.
Unable to attend the awards ceremony due to testing positive for COVID-19, Fraser wrote the following statement:
“Members of the Academy, colleagues, and fellow film artisans:
I am honoured to receive this award from such a distinguished body, which celebrates the crafts of our industry. Dune is greater than the sum of its parts, and I certainly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my camera team, the sound department, the outstanding music composers, the hair and makeup artists, editors, costumers, art and production design departments. The list of people I am indebted to is too long to share, but you know who you are.
I’d have no business accepting this award without thanking my wife, Jodie. You have been the greatest supporter and the reason I am able to forge my path in this challenging industry.
And of course, Denis Villeneuve. I am grateful you took me on this journey with you, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
I’m sorry to not be able to thank you in person tonight, but I tested positive for COVID-19 at the last minute.”
Congratulations to the other talented nominees in the cinematography category for their exceptional work: Ari Wegner ACS (Power of the Dog); Bruno Delbonnel ASC AFC (The Tragedy of Macbeth); Dan Laustsen ASC DFF (Nightmare Alley); and Linus Sandgren ASC FSF (No Time to Die).
Other award wins included Belfast which was named Outstanding British Film; Drive My Car which won Film Not in the English Language; The Harder They Fall which won Outstanding Debut for Jeymes Samuel; and No Time to Die which scooped the Editing prize. The Eyes of Tammy Faye won Make Up & Hair, Cruella won Costume Design.
CODA won Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder, and Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur; West Side Story scooped Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose and Casting award wins; and Original Screenplay was won by Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza. Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) was named the winner in the Documentary category and Encanto won Animated Film.
The British Short Film award was presented to The Black Cop, while the BAFTA for British Short Animation award went to Do Not Feed the Pigeons, shot by NFTS cinematography graduate Taylor Shulin.
Will Smith was named Leading Actor for King Richard and Joanna Scanlan won Leading Actress for After Love. The EE Rising Star Award, voted for by the public, went to Lashana Lynch for her performance in No Time to Die.
Over 30 participants from Breakthrough, BAFTA’s year-long mentoring and guidance initiative, attended this year’s Awards. They included Aleem Khan and Jessie Buckley, who were nominated for awards; Paapa Essiedu and Ray Panthaki, both closely involved with BAFTA-nominated films; and Bukky Bakray and Florence Pugh, who presented awards on stage.
