£5M invested in Figment Studio, a top XR and VP facility powered by Brompton Technology

In a significant boost to Thailand’s film industry, Figment Studio officially opened its doors in September, marking a major step forward in virtual production. The studio, built through a powerful collaboration between The Studio Park, StageFor Co. Ltd., and Supreme Studio Co. Ltd., represents a combined investment of over 200 million baht (£4.6 million). Equipped with advanced technology, including Brompton Technology’s Tessera LED processing, Figment Studio seamlessly merges virtual and real worlds, setting a bold new standard for Thai productions on the global stage.

Managing director Mr. Chayanont Ulit credited the studio’s rapid success to this strategic partnership. The Studio Park, home to Thailand’s largest sound stage and a filming hub in Samut Prakan, has long hosted major Hollywood productions. StageFor Co. Ltd. brings its deep expertise in XR and virtual production, while Supreme Studio Co. Ltd. leads the charge in introducing innovative virtual production technology to Thailand and Southeast Asia. “These partners have been pivotal in shaping Figment Studio, contributing invaluable expertise from day one,” Mr. Chayanont remarked.

Committed to driving the growth of Thailand’s film sector, Figment Studio aims to provide local filmmakers with unparalleled access to virtual production (VP) and in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) technology. “Our vision is to create a hub where professionals can experiment with cutting-edge techniques, fostering sustainable growth for Thailand’s film industry and establishing the country as a top destination for Southeast Asian filmmaking,” said Mr. Chayanont.

The studio’s cutting-edge setup includes a ROE Visual DM 2.6 LED wall spanning 28 metres by 5 metres and a 6-metre by 3-metre Carbon CB3 ceiling, powered by four 4K Tessera SX40 LED processors and nine Tessera XD 10G data distribution units. With advanced calibration using Brompton’s Hydra system, the LED panels are fully ready to support Rec2020 colour space and deliver outstanding 2D and 3D workflows. The facility also leverages Unreal Engine N-Display, disguise vx4, and top-tier tracking systems, ensuring unmatched production capabilities.

Highlighting the studio’s talent, Mr. Chayanont introduced VP technical director Noppon, whose experience spans Netflix productions and FX Network’s Alien: Earth, and VP producer Damon H Chung, known for his in-depth industry knowledge. “When you work with our team, you can trust you’ll achieve your vision,” Mr. Chayanont asserted.

Brompton’s award-winning Tessera processors were specifically selected for their Hollywood-level capabilities, delivering the precise colour accuracy and superior image quality essential in high-end film production. “Brompton was the natural choice for pushing the limits of virtual production,” Mr. Chayanont explained, highlighting the system’s reliability in demanding video applications.

Already, Figment Studio has completed three Netflix projects and a major production with FX Networks this year. With another ambitious project in the works for 2024, the studio is poised to continue pushing the boundaries of virtual production in Thailand. “We’re excited for what lies ahead,” said Mr. Chayanont.

Elijah Ebo, Brompton Technology’s director of APAC Operations, echoed this enthusiasm: “It’s rewarding to see our Tessera processors playing a vital role in Figment Studio’s technical and creative success. Their dedication to pushing the boundaries of virtual production reflects our commitment to providing the best LED video processing technology. It’s no surprise that major players like Netflix and FX trust them with their most ambitious projects.”
