The nominations for the 2022 Gotham Awards have been unveiled. Every year, these awards are given to the most innovative independent productions and represent the first major awards ceremony of the autumn season.
The line-up of nominations includes 10 films from the Venice International Film Festival and a total of 16 nominations. The five movies competing for best feature include TÁR by Todd Field, in competition at the 79th Venice Film Festival, as well as two movies from Biennale College Cinema: The Cathedral by Ricky D’Ambrose (USA) and Dos Estaciones by Juan Pablo González (Mexico).
The greatest number of nominations overall, five, went to the movie TÁR by Todd Field, in competition at the 79th Venice Film Festival. It was nominated for best feature, best screenplay (Todd Field), outstanding lead performance (Cate Blanchett, who received the Volpi Cup at the 79th Venice Film Festival) and two outstanding supporting performances (Nina Hoss and Noémie Merlant). Two nominations each also went to Bones and All by Luca Guadagnino, to Taylor Russell (who received the Mastroianni Award at the 79th Venice Film Festival) and Mark Rylance; and to The Whale by Darren Aronofsky, for the performances by Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau. Both films participated in competition at the 79th Venice Film Festival.
A nomination for best documentary feature went to the movie that won the Golden Lion at the 79th Venice Film Festival, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed by Laura Poitras. Of the six overall nominations for best international feature, four went to movies that competed at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and 2021: Athena by Romain Gavras (79th Venice Film Festival), The Banshees of Inisherin by Martin McDonagh (best screenplay and best actor at the 79th Venice Film Festival), Happening by Audrey Diwan (Golden Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival), Saint Omer by Alice Diop (Grand Jury Prize and the Luigi De Laurentiis Award for Best Debut Film at the 79th Venice Film Festival).
Besides TÁR by Todd Field, the five nominations for best feature include two movies from Biennale College Cinema, the Biennale di Venezia’s laboratory dedicated to training young people, which celebrated its first decade of activity in 2022: The Cathedral by Ricky D’Ambrose (USA, presented at the 2021 Festival and selected for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival) and Dos Estaciones by Juan Pablo González (Mexico), both of which participated in the Biennale College Cinema selections and workshops in 2020-2021 and 2017-2018, respectively.
The Biennale di Venezia sends its sincere congratulations to all the people and productions nominated. As previously announced, the Venice International Film Festival and its artistic director Alberto Barbera will receive an award at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Gotham Awards – which will be held in New York on 28 November – for their significant impact on independent U.S. film.
