The search for the year’s “most creative work in music videos and music visual projects” is under way as the UK Music Video Awards has announced its call for submissions – including in two cinematography categories.

The “premier global celebration of excellence in music video production” is inviting submissions in 39 separate categories from creators around the world via its official website, with a deadline of Monday 3 August.

This year’s Awards show is making a return to London’s Roundhouse. The celebration of “world-beating visual work and the talent behind it” will be held on Wednesday 4 November.

Music video directors will be recognised for achievements in 12 categories defined by music genre: Pop, R&B/Soul/Jazz, Dance/Electronic, Rock, Alternative, Hip Hop/Grime/Rap for both UK and international artists.

There will be four awards for Newcomer directors who have been working professionally for four years or less, as well as a Best Low Budget Video category, now expanded to include Visualisers, to recognise creative projects made for under £5k.

Directorial achievement will also be celebrated with the Best Live Music Video and Best Special Visual Project.

Craft and technical excellence in music videos remain a focus of the UKMVAs programme, and two categories will celebrate the artistry of cinematographers at this year’s Awards.

The highly-competitive Best Cinematography in a Video award, won last year by Denys Lushchyk for his work on A$AP Rocky’s “Tailor Swif” video, honours DPs for their contribution to the medium.

The Newcomer Cinematography award is designed to recognise DPs with less than four years’ experience in music videos and aims to give a platform to those coming through in the craft.

British Cinematographer is delighted to announce that it will continue its media partnership with the UKMVAs to once again celebrate the craft of music video cinematography.

The Best Director and Best New Director, awarded for a body of work over the past year, feature among the Individual and Company categories.

These categories also recognise EPs, producers, creative commissioners and agents, the latter making a return this year to honour the contribution of professionals who represent directors, cinematographers and other specialists whose craft is “essential to the success of music video-making”.

The list is topped off by the coveted Best Production Company category for the best output of work by a company over the past 12 months.

“Since its inception in 2008, the UKMVAs has grown into the leading global awards programme for music video creativity, the most important annual event in the calendar for the world of music video production,” a press release said.

“The UKMVAs Jury, unrivalled in its breadth, brings together creatives from within the UK and from around the world and offers filmmakers an unrivalled opportunity to have their work seen by industry experts and potential future collaborators.”
