With the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny on 28 June, the biggest summer of films begins on the UK’s biggest screen – BFI IMAX at Waterloo.
Tom Cruise returns for more death-defying stunts as super spy Ethan Hunt, who faces his greatest threat yet in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One – playing on BFI IMAX’s 65-foot-high screen from 10 July. Christopher Nolan’s latest epic Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr. and more, opens on 21 July. BFI IMAX is one of only three venues in the UK (and just thirty worldwide) screening Nolan’s latest opus on 70mm as the director intended.
In addition to these blockbuster behemoths there will also be special screenings of Fantasia 2000 and Tron: Legacy, playing on 30 July and 20 August respectively, as part of BFI Southbank’s Making Magic: 100 Years of Disney season which is marking the centenary of The Walt Disney Company with screenings, talks, special events and singalongs taking place until the end of August.
BFI IMAX will also continue to offer its educational strand of programming throughout the summer. These include IMAX documentaries showing the awe-inspiring natural world in its full glory, with films focusing on volcanoes, dinosaurs, space exploration and an ultra up-close look at some of the world’s most fascinating animals. Tickets for these screenings are attractively priced at £12 for adults and £10 for children.
There is something for everyone this summer at BFI IMAX. With a screen size equivalent to over 49,000 iPhone 14s, there is no better place than BFI IMAX to lose yourself in the magic of cinema.
Still reigning supreme as the nation’s biggest screen, the iconic Waterloo destination is a must for movie lovers. In November 2022 BFI IMAX relaunched with wide-ranging enhancements including a new 4K IMAX with Laser projection system, immersive 12-channel sound technology, plush new seats and a brand new 65-foot-high IMAX screen. During the refurbishment, BFI IMAX retained both print projectors: the IMAX GT Projector 15/70mm, and a Century Projector that can screen 35mm/70mm. This follows the BFI resuming the day-to-day running and programming of the landmark venue in July 2022. To date, BFI IMAX remains one of the top ten grossing IMAX cinemas worldwide on James Cameron’s global smash hit Avatar: The Way of the Water.
