Paul Thomas Anderson has announced that his upcoming film, One Battle After Another, will play in VistaVision–including in London.
In a statement on Instagram, Anderson revealed: “One Battle After Another will play in many formats across the world. For the first time in a long time, a film will be projected in VistaVision.
“It’s unlikely many of us have ever seen this. The last wide release film projected in VistaVision was One-Eyed Jacks in 1961. But now, it’s back.
“We have made three VistaVision prints. They will play in Los Angeles, New York, and London. I hope, if you can, that it’s possible to see it this way.”
The Leonardo DiCaprio thriller will screen in VistaVision at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square.
In a statement on its website, the cinema chain teased: “The larger VistaVision film frame allows for double the resolution and a projected image with less grain that can be better illuminated.Â
“The result of which allows for a larger, brighter image with much greater detail than conventional 35mm film is capable of.”
Conventional 35mm projection has the film run vertically through the camera and projector, with each frame four film perforations high. VistaVision 35mm motion picture photography, meanwhile, has the film run horizontally through the camera and projector, with each frame eight film perforations wide.Â
Odeon continued: “Release prints will be made from the original camera negative taking advantage of the full picture area with DTS timecode between the perforations and the edge of the film.Â
“For this release, the DTS audio will use a discrete subwoofer channel for a more dramatic effect.”
VistaVision is not the only notable format in which One Battle After Another will hit cinemas, though.Â
Continuing his statement, Anderson said: “If you like it big and loud and amazing, we have IMAX 70mm film screenings. If you like old-fashioned 5-perf 70mm prints, then we have that, too.
“You don’t need reminding, but it always bears repeating that seeing film on film is the way nature intended. So don’t go against nature and seek out your local theatre that projects film.”Â
