The Commission Supérieure Technique de l’image et du son (CST) celebrated the craftspeople who shape cinema from the shadows on Saturday, naming two technical laureates whose work quietly defined some of this year’s most talked-about films on the Croisette.
Nicolas Rumpl, head film editor of Notre Salut directed by Emmanuel Marre, took the CST Award for Best Artist-Technician. The jury praised his work in terms that spoke to the deepest purpose of editing — not mere assembly, but revelation. His editorial choices, they said, expose the film’s visual aesthetic, directorial ambition, and the full emotional depth of the actors’ performances.
The second prize went to a name already written into the film’s credits in a remarkably personal way. Esther Mysius, production designer of The Birthday Party directed by Léa Mysius, claimed the CST Award for Best Young Female Film Technician. The jury noted that her meticulous eye transforms physical space into storytelling, making environment and character inseparable.
Both awards reflect the CST’s long-standing mission: to spotlight the technical artistry that serves a director’s vision without seeking the spotlight itself. The wins rounded out a landmark night at the 79th Festival, which saw Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord claim the Palme d’Or.
The CST Awards ceremony will take place on 29 September at Publiciscinémas.
