
The 2025 British Independent Film Awards nominees have been announced, celebrating “outstanding filmmaking and extraordinary talent from the British film industry and beyond”.
My Father’s Shadow leads the way with 12 nominations – including for Jermaine Edwards in the Best Cinematography category.
The film also received nods for Best British Independent Film, Best Director and The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director).
Joining Edwards in the Best Cinematography race are:
- Charlotte Bruus Christensen ASC for H Is for Hawk
- Cécile Embleton for Mother Vera
- Seamus McGarvey ASC BSC for Die My Love
- Piotr Niemyjski for A Pale View of Hills
Harry Lighton’s debut feature Pillion, following the ups and downs (and pleasures and pains) of a budding relationship between two very different men, has received 10 nods in total – including for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Debut Director and Best Debut Screenwriter.
Powerful British drama I Swear is close behind with nine nominations across Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and more.
Die My Love received eight nominations, including for the aforementioned work from McGarvey, and Urchin has six, with Best Debut Director and Best British Independent Film among them.
The Ballad of Wallis Island and Wasteman follow close behind with five apiece.
The nominees for BIFA’s inaugural Cinema of the Year award were also announced. The five nominated cinemas are: Depot Cinema in Lewes, The Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn, Wales, Montrose Playhouse in Scotland, Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast and Watershed in Bristol.
The second round of public voting to decide the winner is now live and will run until Tuesday 25 November at 11pm.
