Born in South Korea and based in Los Angeles, Chung-hoon Chung ASC first captured attention with his camerawork in director Park Chan-wook’s thriller Oldboy. He subsequently received international acclaim for the features Lady Vengeance; I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK; Thirst and The Handmaiden.
After working as an actor for 15 years — starting at age 5 — Chung-hoon refined his visual and storytelling sensibilities by studying directing and acting at Dongguk University in Seoul. Wanting to maintain visual control, he shot his own projects, and soon other student directors were asking him to shoot their films as well. At 25, he served as director of photography on the 1996 feature Yuri, and he has remained on the cinematography path ever since.
Chung-hoon made his American-feature debut with the 2013 psychological thriller Stoker, also directed by Park.
In 2015, he shot the teenage comedy-drama Me and Earl and the Dying Girl for director Alfonso Gomez-Rejón, with whom he later reteamed on the period drama The Current War.
Chung-hoon photographed the 2017 Stephen King adaptation It, directed by Andrés Muschietti, and Hotel Artemis, written and directed by Drew Pearce. In 2019, he shot Zombieland: Double Tap for director Ruben Fleischer and Earthquake Bird for director Wash Westmoreland.
His most recent credits include Edgar Wright’s 2021 psychological thriller Last Night in Soho, which received a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Film of the Year; Fleischer’s 2022 box-office hit Uncharted; the Lucasfilm/Disney Plus series Obi-Wan Kenobi, directed by Deborah Chow; and the Warner Bros. prequel Wonka, directed by Paul King.
