Hamnet took Best Feature Film, with its director, Chloé Zhao, winning Best Director, while its star, Jessie Buckley, triumphed in Best Performance in a Leading Role.
Other films up for Best Feature Film included Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay, A House of Dynamite, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and Sorry, Baby, from Eva Victor.
Elsewhere, Geeta Gandbhir’s The Perfect Neighbor won Best Documentary, Tamara Deverell won Best Production Design for Frankenstein, and Olivia Neergaard-Holm won Best Editing for The Chronology of Water.
On announcing the nominees, Girls on Film co-founder and exec producer Hedda Lornie Archbold explained the importance of the awards – of which British Cinematographer is a sponsor – saying: “The titles nominated in the Girls on Film Awards form a constellation of genre-spanning work that challenges convention and embraces bold, imaginative storytelling.
“These films show that cinema can be both art and a spirited act of resistance, and that when women take the reins, cinema gets a whole lot more interesting and playful.”
