At the Critics’ Week Awards ceremony held at Cannes Film Festival, the Sony Discovery Award for short films, worth €4,000, was awarded to Skinny Bottines (Skinny Boots) by Romain F. Dubois (cin. Ménad Kesraoui).
This year, 10 films were in the running for the Sony Discovery Award for short films. The jury was chaired by Payal Kapadia (filmmaker) and comprised Ama Ampadu (producer), Donsaron Kovitvanitcha (journalist and programmer), Théodore Pellerin (actor) and Oklou (songwriter and singer-songwriter).
“With Skinny Bottines, Dubois has created a funny and endearing film, imbued with a truly bold aesthetic,” said Sony.
“It is a free-spirited work that showcases instinctive and inventive direction, revealing a promising voice in contemporary Quebec cinema.
“As a partner of Critics’ Week, Sony is proud to support this award, which shines a spotlight on new voices in world cinema.
“By supporting short films – a prime arena for experimentation and narrative daring – Sony fosters the emergence of unique voices and encourages cinematic innovation.
“At a time when content consumption patterns are evolving and audiences have greater access than ever to a diversity of cultures, perspectives and narratives, Sony is reaffirming its decades-long commitment to new cinematic forms and celebrating the filmmakers who shape the way we discover the world.”
“Critics’ Week is, by definition, a place of discovery,” added Florence Quintin, head of film and video marketing at Sony Europe.
“The short film is often one of the first outlets for expression for new talent in world cinema. This award is part of our ongoing commitment to creativity, from our masterclasses to our tools for students and the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards.”
