The British Society of Cinematographers has announced that the 2026 BSC Mentorship Scheme is now open for applications.Â
As part of its ongoing remit to education, the BSC will provide 40 mentoring opportunities for young DPs and camera operators during 2026/27.
Applications are open to anyone living in the United Kingdom and over 21 years old. The scheme is not open to those still in full-time education.Â
To apply, visit the BSC website. The closing date is 6pm on Monday 4 May 2026.
More information – provided by the BSC – is available below.
What do you get from the mentorship?
The basic commitment is six x one-hour contact time with mentors across a six to 12 month period.Â
This can be on Zoom or a phone call, but the BSC encourages the first meeting to be in person if possible.
Beyond this commitment, mentors might be able to arrange:
- A set visit (where possible)
Previous mentees have got so much from the experience of being on set – even one day can be hugely beneficial. Mentees would be on set to observe only: they are not a working member of the camera department. - Joining mentors for a recce or part of pre-production
If a mentor is in pre-production, mentees might be able to join them on a recce or sit in on a production meeting. - Joining mentors in the grade
Mentors will need permission from their producer to bring mentees into the grade: this cannot always be obtained and mentees may be required to sign an NDA.
