Autumn Arkapaw Durald ASC scooped Best Cinematography at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for her stunning work on Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
The win follows her recent nomination at the Critics Choice Awards.
Speaking to British Cinematographer about the importance of the film, she said: “The visuals jumped off the page and culturally there’s so much history of the Delta Blues and Mississippi in our ancestry.
“This story is close to my heart because my father is Creole and born in New Orleans, where much of my family still lives. Its themes dealing with the Black experience in the south, community, and the legacy of segregation resonate deeply with me.”
On working with Coogler, she added: “Throughout prep and shooting Ryan fell in love with the IMAX format, and would say, ‘I think we should shoot this in IMAX too?’ So the list of IMAX scenes got bigger as the film evolved.”
Elsewhere at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Jafar Panahi followed up his success at the Gotham Awards with the Best Director prize for It Was Just an Accident.
Likewise, after scooping Best Feature at the Gothams, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was named Best Film by the NYFCC.
The Secret Agent, lensed by Evgenia Alexandrova AFC, was named Best International Film, while Marty Supreme scooped Best Screenplay.
Meanwhile, comedy-drama Eephus won Best First Film and My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow, another Gothams winner, took Best Non-Fiction Film.
